Ms. Granlund is the main engineering teacher at Gunn. She teaches Principles of Engineering (POE) and mentors the Gunn Robotics Team.
In the past, she also taught Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) and Digital Electronics (DE).
Policies and Idiosyncrasies
She has strict rules about how notebooks are to be kept, mainly to make it easier for her to grade them. For example, she insists that complete their work in pen for readability purposes; except for diagrams, drawings, and math where constantly crossing out mistakes would instead impede readability. Assignments are to be logged in a table of contents with the date and first page indicated. (Multi-page assignments are assumed to be continued on the next page, unless a note saying "continued on page __" is at the bottom of a page.) Any paper taped into the notebook must not obscure that page's page number, and pages should not be ripped out because that would mess up the page order.
According to her, she does not often grant extensions because students tend to procrastinate away the extra time given. However, she does allow assignment revisions.
Ms. Granlund describes herself as "not an easy grader", being quite keen on catching small mistakes and docking points for them, so be sure to follow good practices (which are the practices she expects) when completing work. She also expects students, especially Honors students, to think more deeply when given an open-ended question.
She also expects that students show up on time and have the time to complete homework, criticizing students for taking on too many extracurriculars, and getting annoyed when school events (like Elimination) interfere with class. She is quoted as saying, "I am not subservient to AP classes".
Personality
Ms. Granlund's personality can be described in many ways. She can be at times somewhat cold, similar to Dr. Mellows, and does not sugar-coat things or talk down to students. If there's something you don't understand, it is almost certainly worth it to ask her; she is perfectly willing to clear things up and correct mistakes without getting annoyed or judging you. But at times she can also be irritable and sarcastic. She also has a nerdy sense of humor and starts every class with an xkcd comic.
She is an extremely hardworking teacher and devotes significant time to the robotics team and to grading notebooks.
