The fire alarm has frequently gone off at Gunn High School for the past few years. Usually, the causes of these alarms are unknown, but some conjectured causes are students who want to skip class, Chem experiments that go wrong, cooking smoke, or crows. The cause of these alarms is almost never a fire though, which defeats the purpose of the alarms. Most recently, three fire alarms went off on August 19, August 21, and August 22, 2024. The school district is currently attempting to fix the fire alarm system [1] so that the fire alarms only go off if there is an actual fire, and do not go off for unknown reasons, unnecessarily wasting class time.

In the 2022–2023 school year, the traditional loud, disruptive fire alarms were replaced with a calm voice coming from the new clocks telling students to evacuate with the wall-mounted flashers still operating as a visual cue. In 2023–2024, the auditory warning was replaced with short, calm beeps coming from the clock.

Assistant principal Dr. Hixon stated in August 20, 2024 that the school recently had a new fire alarm panel that allows them to "locate where the smoke came from and addressed it immediately". [2]
