Daniel "Danny" Hahn is a math teacher at Gunn High School. He teaches Analysis H and AP Calculus BC. He also advises Math Circle and is the head of the math department.
Personality and philosophy
Mr. Hahn generally has a very sunny and outgoing personality. By his own account, he had a similar upbringing and academic background to most Gunn students (which cannot be said of the majority of teachers), so he is generally understanding about kids' stressors, displaying a genuine interest in what's going on in their lives. He also rarely[dubious - discuss] gets mad at students, even when they are on their phones during class or forget to turn in homework; instead he gently tells them to stop.
Policies and idiosyncrasies
Mr. Hahn's homework policy is very simple: If a student misses class on the day that homework is assigned or the day it is due, then they are exempt from it. Otherwise, students only receive points if they have the homework on the exact day it is due. Homework is not checked every day.
As for recommendation letters, he has a form essentially asking you to write your own letter. He is extremely willing to send it out to whatever programs you want, though you need to remind him to submit it.
Taking advantage
Some students asked Mr. Hahn on his view of posting favorable information of teachers on the Wiki, out of fear that readers would take advantage of teachers' leniency. Mr. Hahn responded that he did not feel it was an issue, and that teachers would feel free to reverse their policies if they felt students were abusing them. Therefore, please don't abuse Mr. Hahn's (or any other teacher's) kindness, or you could ruin it for everyone!
