Course catalog description

The AP Language and Culture courses provide students with opportunities to demonstrate their proficiency at the intermediate to pre-advanced range in each of the 3 modes of communication on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Students are expected to: engage in spoken and written interpersonal communication; synthesize information from a variety of authentic audio or audiovisual resources; synthesize information from a variety of authentic written and print resources; plan, produce and present spoken and written presentations. The 6 broad themes of study include beauty and aesthetics, contemporary life, families and communities, global challenges, personal and public identities, and science and technology.

• Prior Recommended Course(s): Level 3 or department approval; grades 10-12

• Homework Expectation: Up to 2 hours per week

Should I take this course?

This class is generally less stressful than Spanish 3, though students should be able to express themselves and have confidence in their Spanish abilities. It is geared strongly towards preparing students for the AP test, with classwork including reading comprehension, essay and email writing, and "guided conversations".

The homework estimate on the course catalog is a bit on the high side; students typically receive one multiple-choice reading/listening comprehension assignment per week, similar to questions on the multiple choice section of the AP exam. There is no homework towards the beginning and end of the year, and homework assignments are graded for completion.
