Gunn offers foreign language classes from level 1 to AP in Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, German, and Japanese. This covers all AP languages except Italian, a language for which there is low demand, and Latin, a dead language.
Additionally, Civilization and Culture classes are offered for Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and French, as well as AP Spanish Literature and Culture.
Progression
All students are required to take up to Level 2 in a language, although UCs recommend taking a language up to Level 3, and some Ivys recommend taking a language up to AP Level. Unusually, Chinese has 4 pre-AP levels, rather than 3, due to the large amount of cultural content covered in the class.
Idiosyncracies
- Foreign language teachers heavily use Schoology for their exercises
- Foreign language teachers often play games such as Kahoot and Gimkit in class to practice skills
- Courses are semi-standardized across teachers, and some languages have only 1 or 2 teachers assigned to them
- Most work for foreign language classes tends to be done in class, although this rule does not apply to the Chinese language classes, which often have elaborate projects
- Foreign language classes tend to involve a lot of projects
