A school year, as opposed to a calendar year, describes the length of time that students are in a given grade. The school year is subdivided into two grading periods called semesters, which are for convenience subdivided into two quarters each.
Within the school year are four notable breaks:
- Thanksgiving break, occurring in late November, lasts 1 week.
- Winter Break, in late December and early January, lasts 2 weeks. It divides the first and second semesters.
- Spring Break, in early April, lasts 1 week.
- Summer Break, beginning in early June and ending in mid-August, lasts 2½ months.
