Alternate schedules are schedules that differ from the normal bell schedule and exist for a variety of reasons: most often to accommodate a long weekend, but sometimes also to accommodate standardized testing, teacher training, or other schoolwide events.

Examples

A full list of alternate schedules with dates and times can be found on Gunn's website. The following alternate schedules are reasonably common:

  • Friday off: Typically, if there is a long weekend with Friday off, then the Monday schedule is eliminated, Wednesday is moved to Monday, and Friday is moved to Wednesday. This means that PRIME is on Monday and SELF/Study Hall on Wednesday.
  • Monday off: If there is a long weekend with Monday off, then the 7-period Monday is simply eliminated.
  • Minimum day: Minimum days occur the Friday before Spring and Winter Break. They eliminate Lunch and SELF, and sometimes shorten the other classes.
  • Late-Start mondays: Sometimes, there are late-start Mondays that run from 10:00 to 3:50. All classes are shortened to 35 minutes, Brunch is held from 10:00 to 10:15, and Lunch is held from 12:20 to 12:50, between periods 3 and 4.
  • Finals: During finals week, each period is extended to 2 hours, with periods 1 and 2 on one day; periods 3 and 4 on another; and 5, 6, and 7 on the last.
  • Extended lunch: When schoolwide events such as the Harvest Feast or Health Fair occur at lunch, the lunch period will sometimes be extended by 10 or 15 minutes (12:20-1:15, for example). The extra time is taken from the beginning of PRIME so all classes can remain a regular length of time; these events almost always happen on Wednesdays.
