Geometry H is a freshmen-only class, which is a class taken by some students who took Algebra 8 in middle school.
Course catalog
In addition to the objectives of the Geometry A curriculum, students study an extensive inferential logic unit including truth validity and tautologies, complete conditional, direct and indirect proofs. Students are expected to be highly motivated to learn about mathematics and have exceptional algebra skills. Students are regularly exposed to challenging, multi-step and non-routine problems.
- Prerequisites: Successful completion of an Algebra course; open to grade 9
- Students self-report spending an average of 2.5 hours a week outside of school on this course
- District SLOs Addressed in this Course: 1, 2, 5, 6
- This is an honors course
There is no Geometry A at Gunn currently, students willing to study Geometry can only take Geometry or Geometry Honors.
Units studied
- Logic, logic rules, and proof
- Points, Lines, Planes, and Angles
- Parallelism and Transformations
- Triangle Congruence and Quadrilaterals
- Coordinate Geometry
- Inequalities and Similarities
- Right Triangles
- Circles
- Area
- Volume
Few weeks before finals, students might be assigned to an exploration project. The units may not be taught in order. In addition, the unit about logic, logic rules, and proof are considered as the most difficult topic in Geometry.
Should I sign up for this class?
This class is heavily proof-based and has many theorems to be memorized. Anybody registering for this course should be ready for plenty of brainwork. If you want to be prepared the best for future courses in the Gunn honors math lane though, you should take Geo H, as it is a good introduction to the complex problem-solving required to do well in these courses.
