A freshman, frosh, or 9th grader is a student in their first year of high school after graduating from a middle school. The color yellow is typically associated with freshmen during school-wide inter-grade events like Homecoming.

Course selection

Freshmen are required to have 7 classes, 5 of which are in fixed disciplines.

English

Freshmen can take English 9 or English 9A.

Social Studies

All freshmen take World History (or World History SLC). Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, all freshmen will be required to take a new California Ethnic Studies course, per California law. The World History course will be shortened to one semester.

Math

Students who took Math 8 take Algebra 1 in 9th grade. Students who took Algebra 8 have a choice between Geometry and Geometry H. Freshman who skipped a year of math and did Geometry H in 8th grade take Algebra 2 + Trig H.

Science

Freshmen have the choice between Biology or Biology H.

PE

Freshmen must take either PE 9 or Zero period PE 9. PE electives may not be taken during the freshman year.
